49 returns home after visit to the NRM York

49 returned to us on Monday 2nd June after spending time at the NRM exhibition at York to commemorate 40 years since the last steam loco ran in regular service on BR. It had been in steam every day of the exhibition and was used on the shuttle in the yard on the last 3 days.

Photos of its visit are now in the photo gallery on this site and of  particular interest is the photos of 49 under the wires on the East Coast main line coupled to 70013 Oliver Cromwell

While it was away trains were in the capable hands of Cochrane and Rennishaw.

Work on locomotives and wagons as described in my last note continues. Work has also started on the manufacture of new doors for the locomotive shed,

A Brief History

The Railways original purpose was the movement of coal from nearby collieries to ships on the River Tyne.

The oldest part, c1647, was the Lobley Hill section, it had over 300 years of coal traffic when closed in 1964. The surviving 1725 Sunniside to Causey section is now the World's Oldest Working Railway and the Causey to East Tanfield section dates from 1839.

Marley Hill engine shed, built in 1854 and in colliery use until 1970, is where the loco fleet is maintained. the shed is open to the public every day. The staiton cafe, shop and toilets are only open when trains are running but toilet facilities are available at the shed. Refreshments are available daily at The Potters Wheel (near Sunniside station), the Causey Arch Hotel (near Causey station) and the Blue Bell Inn (near East Tanfield station).
