We are delighted to announce that we won the North-East Picnic site of the year and we were entered in the national finals representing the North East. We came 3rd in the finals which is very good for a first attempt. The prize for coming 1st in the North East is £500 to be spent on improving the picnic site. At the time of writing we have two carriages on loan to the BBC for filming an episode of Cranford. This is being fimed at the Foxfield Railway who are using them with Bellerophon. The two coaches Nos 5 and 6 should be returning to us in the middle of June. Work continues on Twizell and the NER bogie coach on loan from Beamish, both of which are hoped to be put into service this year. The MS & L coach No 8 is also receiving an overhaul and should be back in service soon. Other work is a full repaint of the cafe and the fencing on Andrews House station and the painting of all gates near the entrance. The entrance into the Car Park has been widened so that coaches can now park up there instead on having to negotiate the bridge and park up in the picnic area. |

The Railways original purpose was the movement of coal from nearby collieries to ships on the River Tyne. The oldest part, c1647, was the Lobley Hill section, it had over 300 years of coal traffic when closed in 1964. The surviving 1725 Sunniside to Causey section is now the World's Oldest Working Railway and the Causey to East Tanfield section dates from 1839. Marley Hill engine shed, built in 1854 and in colliery use until 1970, is where the loco fleet is maintained. The shed is open to the public every day. The station cafe, shop and toilets are only open when trains are running but toilet facilities are available at the shed. Refreshments are available daily at The Potters Wheel (near Sunniside station), the Causey Arch Hotel (near Causey station) and the South Causey Inn or Blue Bell Inn (near East Tanfield station). |
